Why is the right Lighting in the Home essential?

Light / Biophilia / Orientation

The combination of natural and artificial lighting in the home plays a critical role in our health, comfort and happiness.
We need sunlight to flood the home and support our activities during the day.
On cloudy days, and otherwise when sufficient natural light is limited, we need supplemental artificial lighting.

The direction, intensity, color temperature, reflection and glare contribute substantially to our experience in the home.

How does light affect our health and well-being?

• affects our circadian rhythm
• influences the internal organs’ function
• contributes to improved sleep
• leads to increased productivity

Light entering our eyes impacts our circadian rhythm, responsible for vital processes in the body, such as waking and sleep patterns, body temperature and appetite.
In this way light is responsible for the function of essential internal organs.
Proper light levels can improve sleep, lead to increased productivity, and help us feel more energetic.
When ample indoor lighting is available during the period of lowest sunlight, seasonal effective disorder and sensitivities can be reduced.

How do we approach light in a holistic home design?

• designing the space layout considering natural light
• providing ample daylighting to all habitable spaces
• supplementing with artificial lighting for ample daylighting
• creating soft and warm evening lighting
• planning for suitable shading

We design the home to allow for plentiful daylight to illuminate all habitable spaces (hallways, pantries, and other supporting functions excluded). Windows, skylights and light wells are some of the possible design elements we could utilize to soak up the perfect level of natural light in the home and diffuse some direct sunlight.
In addition, we address the effects of over-lighting, such as glare and unwanted heat gain by seeking a balance with tinting the windows, overhangs, shading devices and landscaping. Shading devices also serve the purpose to reduce sound transmission, heat gain and play an aesthetic role.

Where needed, we supplement with artificial lighting – ceiling mounted for general illumination, sconces for specific areas and wall washing, floor lamps for comfort and task lights for work areas.
We plan for soft evening lights with warm color temperature closely resembling candle light. We ensure they are dimmable to provide a cozy and relaxed atmosphere, which in turn supports our sleep.

The main takeaway is that the light in the home is consequential for our health and well-being. This necessitates adequate planning, strategy and execution to create the right lighting in the home.
