These types of flooring are trendy because they come in numerous patterns, from wood to marble, they are cheap and easy to install. LVTs and LVPs are made of petroleum-based plastics containing phthalates, which are used to improve the flexibility of the plastic.
Here are the health-related issues linked to elevated levels of phthalates:
1. Endocrine disruptors They can cause a hormonal havoc, which could lead to obesity and type II diabetes.
2. Reproductive challenges Both, men and women, can experience reproductive challenges, including fertility issues with difficulties conceiving and carrying a pregnancy, as well as developmental issues.
3. Known carcinogens They are known carcinogens and are associated with breast cancer.
4. Childhood cancer Elevated levels of phthalates are linked to cancers in children.
5. Water contamination and exposure When disposed of, they likely leach in the soil and contaminate the water. It recirculates to our faucets and we end up drinking it.
The main takeaway is that LVT and LVP shouldn’t not be chosen for the home, as they have been linked to numerous serious illnesses.
What are alternative healthier choices? Instead of using LVT or LVP consider healthier options, such as ceramic tile and hardwood flooring!
