Where are the Plastics in our Kitchen and why should we eliminate them?

We may have an otherwise healthy diet and lifestyle but the presence of plastics in our kitchen could be affecting our health, well-being and nourishment. They can be concealed or in plain sight.

What are the plastics to be aware of?

• Vinyl - can be ethylene-based or chloride-based
• PVC - a chloride-based type of vinyl using phthalate additives
• Acrylic resin – can have a chlorine content
• Polyester resin - may contain BPAs

How do these plastics in the kitchen affect our health?

These chemicals contaminate the air, water and food.
They are linked to various illnesses, including skin and eyes irritations, potential lung and liver issues, damage to the immune system, fertility challenges, and are known carcinogens.

Where are the plastics located in the kitchen?

Countertops
• Solid surface countertops often contain acrylic resins
• Quartz countertops contain acrylic and polyester resins
• Peel & stick counter tops are made of PVC vinyl

Flooring
• Luxury Vinyl Tile and Luxury Vinyl Plank are, as the name states, vinyl products
• Carpets are often made of petroleum-based materials, including PVC

Cabinetry
• Plastic laminate cabinets are typically made of PVC plastics
• Wood veneer faced cabinets often have PVC edging

Furniture upholstery
• Polyester upholstery is often coated with PVC vinyl

Faucets, water filters and pipes
• Faucets and water filters may contain plastic parts
• The supply piping should never be PVC but on occasion it is

Plastic containers, packaging and water bottles
• Plastic containers, packaging and water bottles often contain BPA stabilizers and phthalates as plasticizers

The main takeaway is that the plastics could be in numerous items in the kitchen. These plastics are linked to many serious illnesses. The materials containing them should be avoided and eliminated from our kitchen!

What are the alternative solutions?

Whenever possible to use natural materials, such as solid wood, natural stone, and natural upholstery fabrics. Glass and stainless steel are also significantly better options for kitchen items than plastics.
