How to select Colors in the Home for Well-being and Good Mood?

Colors / Light / Biophilia / Thermal Comfort / Creative Expression

Colors play an important role in our well-being, mood, behavior and performance. We need to know their characteristics and understand how to best customize a palette for our home.

What are the three main characteristics of color?

1. Hue
The hue of a color is determined by the wavelengths of light reaching our eyes. Hues can be warm or cool.

2. Saturation
The saturation is the characteristic of a color to appear vivid and vibrant or pale and faded.

3. Brightness
The brightness is the property of a color determining its lightness or darkness and it is a relative value.

We select and apply colors in the home to serve our well-being, to evoke a particular mood or behavior. We reach the desired effect by working with the various combinations of the three characteristics of color.

Productivity
• A warm hue with higher saturation and lightness can energize and stimulate us.

Innovation and creativity
• Bright, vibrant and reflective colors have the potential to encourage inventiveness and creativity.

Calmness and serenity
• A cool color hue and a pale low saturation helps create a calm, comfortable and peaceful experience in a space.

Coziness
• Warm, dark and muted color options evoke the feeling of coziness and security.

Spaciousness
• Cool, light and reflective colors help a space appear larger and radiant.

Thermal comfort
• Lighter colors reflect the light keeping surfaces cool, while darker ones absorb the solar radiation warming up the surface and space.

The main takeaway is that the color selection for each space in the home should be carefully and thoughtfully considered, as it can impact our well-being, mood and behavior.
